Hackathon Challenge
100,000+ healthy pets are killed in council pounds and shelters, without ever being offered for adoption. These pets are either left and surrendered by their owners, trapped in community, lost and unclaimed.
The Opportunity
Can we leverage local foster carers to redirect lost, unwanted, stray, neglected pets into a network of community safe houses for temporary accomodation?

A PREVENTIVE MEASURE
We want to disrupt the council pound system by redirecting lost and neglected pets first into the community foster network.
As a concept, Safety Shelter is a community initiative where we help locals with lost or neglected animals that need temporary housing.
The SafetyShelter Program is a positive preventative measure, which successfully provides assistance to animals in distress or temporary housing before entering the pound system.
It also acts as a system to take off stress from the local pound and rangers that shouldn’t immediately need to deal with lost animals.

SAFETY AND SECURITY
The SafetyShelter Program offers a place of safety and security for animals. The SafetyShelter sign on a house letterbox or shop window means that the premises have been thoroughly checked and designated as a safe place. People can go to that house/ property to drop off a lost animal in the area, or get in contact about lost animals.

EMPOWERED SEARCH
Users can register into the SafetyShelter platform and either:
-
Volunteer their home as a SafetyShelter/ and be a temporary foster carer.
-
Find SafetyShelters near them in case they find a lost/wandering pet or surrender a pet that cannot be cared for anymore.

LOCALS HELP LOCALS
App allows users to search for registered SafetyShelters near your area via an interactive list or map view.
Users can also filter SafetyShelters that can accommodate specific type of pets- be it dogs, cats, bunnies or others.
